Various - Mundial Muzique

Just in time for summer 1999, we are pleased to announce the release of Mundial Muzique, a selection of the most upfront Afro-Caribbean, Latin and Brazilian rhythms to emerge from the world's dancefloors during the past year. The follow up to last summer's acclaimed world cup tribute album, Mundial Muzique is the second volume in a series charting the evolution of the modern tropical groove. This installment features sounds from some of the most talented and innovative artists from the global dance diaspora, including: Masters at Work, Azymuth, Jazzanova, Da Lata, Mr.Gone and more. Here they fuse a wealth of traditional afro, funk, jazz, samba, salsa and bossa nova influences with modern production techniques to create a tropical blend guaranteed to heat up your nightclub, beachfront, or local futbol stadium. The ideal summer soundtrack, Mundial Muzique will appeal to world music lovers, househeads and fans of traditional latin and afro vibes. The sub tropical journey begins with Turnstyle Orchestra's live afro reconstruction of "Latin Soul" one of the standout tracks from last summer's Copa Mundial Muzique CD. Montreal producers Miguel Graca and Christian Pronovost scrap the samples and turn in a tribal house workout fueled by live percussion, flamenco guitars and beautiful ambient strings. Next up, seminal 70's Brazilian band, Azymuth enlist the production services of London talent, Roc Hunter on "Ah Voce Nao Sabe". This gorgeous slice of afro-jazz funk fusion was licensed from Joe Davis' outstanding Far Out label and appeared previously on the band's brillant "Woodland Warriors" album and on a limited edition 12". The stage is then set for Mr Gone "Mosquito Coast" an extremely groovy, uplifting samba fusion joint licensed from highly respected London label Internal Bass. Talented Toronto producer, Nick Holder turns up the heat on the "Da Sambafrique" a firing samba house number combining batacuda style percussion, an extremely catchy keyboard hook, a pumping bassline and pulsating horns to create a future carnival anthem! Guidance Recordings artist Brother of Soul takes us to the bridge on "Ife Bobowa", a beautiful, cinematic afro-brazilian soundtrack. A dramatic ambient string led into sets the stage for a mad percussion frenzy accompanied by lovely african vocal chants before breaking back down into a soothing keyboard solo which ends this emotional journey on a peaceful note. Next up, label mates NuSpirit Helsinki enlist a virtual United Nations of top flight musicians to turn out this afro-cuban classic exclusively for this compilation! Eight minutes of pure unadulterated afro-funk fusion complete with live percussion, flutes, bass, trombone, clavinette and guitars. Germany's men of the moment, Jazzanova turn it up a notch on "Welcome to the Party" a stunning latin jazz reconstruction of this classic from the Harlem Youth Percussion Group. Swinging percussion, a hypnotic bassline, warm and lovely organ vibes with a dash of ethereal Argentinian vocal chants thrown in for good measure. Just what the doctor ordered! Licensed from San Francisco's ultra hip Ubiquity Records. The following selection "Brazilian Skies", is a lost classic from 70's jazz percussionist Bill Summers rescued from the vaults of San Francisco's acclaimed Prestige label. A breezy feel good samba vocalize inspired by the breathtaking Brazilian landscape, this jam sounds as fresh today as it did over 20 years ago! Next up is the stunning " Pienso En Ti" , Masters at Work's moving tribute to their rich musical heritage. An authentic slice of ambient salsa house heaven complete with relentless percussion, and beautiful guitar and keyboard arrangements which provide the perfect backdrop for the soul stirring vocals of Luis Salinas. Authentica como tu! The tropical journey winds down with "Pra Manha" ,Da Lata's modern day homage to the 1970's Brazilian dancefloor jazz sound. Produced by London jazz dance luminary Patrick Forge, Christian Frank and vocalist Liliana Chachian, this touch of class is already causing quite a stir on the world's more open minded dancefloors. Licensed from Chris Blackwell's new Palm Pictures label.

Guidance hits the mark once again with the second in a series highlighting "modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and Brazilian rhythms." Most tracks are midtempo percussive workouts with a breezy, summertime feel. Don't miss Turnstyle Orchestra's "Latin Soul," a tribal house jam guaranteed to work up a sweat on the most jaded dancefloors. Imagine Fela Kuti teaming up with Masters at Work and you'll have some idea of where this is headed. Beautiful cover art as well.

Compost meets Guidance meets Prestige.

Atlanta's Karl Injex and Guidance team up to show their diversity of influences and display the vast range of sounds that house music encompasses. This album features some of the best producers around and Guidance demonstrates once again why they are on top. Turnstyle Orchestra's "Latin Soul" kicks off the album with it's warm ambience and smooth vocals. Other standouts tracks are Mr. Gone's "Mosquito Coast" a magical funky piece that will have you dreaming of sundrenched islands, "Da Sambafrique" from Nick Holder (this man can do no wrong), and Jazzanova's "Welcome to the Party," the sweetest jazz-funk jam. All the other selections are very cool, each track compliments the last and the album flows perfectly without any mixing. Rumour has it that a vinyl version is also available, also look out for Guidance's next full length Voices of Urban Renewal.

Fresh from Flavour Distribution comes Mundial Muzique: A Selection of Modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin and Brazilian Rhythms (Guidance), a 90's update of the Latin good groove with lashings of organic techno flavours thrown into the mix. This most special and beautiful disc has been delighting me daily since it arrived. Deep, warm and jazzy, peppered with inspired playing and wistful summer sensibilities, its slippery rhythms insinuate themselves into your consciousness like a daydream. Hugely recommended!

Confronted by something billed as " the follow up to last summer's World Cup tribute album", you may be tempted to make your excuses and leave, but wait a minute there, Mr. Hasty. This turns out to be an unbelievably cool Afro-Latin-Caribbean collection, which takes luminaries like Masters at Work and Jazzanova, unleashes them in a tropical paradise of soulful exotica, and sits back to watch them playing happily on a sundrenched beach. Pack your carnival trousers.

Cherry Picking nuggets from the world's dancefloors, this is a showcase of modern dance artists infusing their music with African and Brazilian influences. With Latin American house reportedly the flavor of this coming autumn, 'Mundial Muzique' seems pretty damned necessasary. The bionic grooves of Azymuth's 'Ah Voce Nao Sabe' and the dazzling shuffle of Mr. Gone's 'Mosquito Coast' are two essential highlights. Faultlessly funky futurist/world fusion, he alliterated.

The latest compilation from Chicago's Guidance label is a strong collection of latin influenced tracks, mostly licensed from other labels around the globe. The CD flows smoothly from the fully percussive to sophisticated jazz excursions and creates a perfect soundtrack for summer's cruisy cocktail moments. And for those who've had a few, its also funkin enough to turn up for a shuffle around the floor. Highlights include Nick Holder's exotic lounge theme, 'Da Sambafrique', the extended tribal breakdown of Turnstyle Orchestra's 'Latin Soul'and Mr. Gone's suspenseful ' Mosquito Coast' which builds from a walking piano loop before easing into a gentle flute solo. Other contributing artists of note include Jazzanova from Germany who are considered the hottest remixers of jazz flavored house at the moment: although not to write off Masters at Work whose track Pienso en Ti is produced with their usual depth and unrivaled clarity. Also of particular note is Bill Summers whose kitch vocalize number, Brazilian skies, is arguably more relevant now than when it was recorded in 1977. Put Mundial Muzique on while watching S Club 7 with the sound down, the doors closed, the heater up high and summer is already here.

As this record's subtitle declares, this is "a selection of modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and Brazilian rhythms." It's also much more rounding off with touches of chilled Chicago house on Turnstyle Orchestra's 'Latin Soul' and the gray area of bachelor pad swing-time music on Bill Summers' Brazilian Skies'. Guidance are unleashing some excellent vinyl contributions to the global dance music phenomenon and Mundial Muzique captures their deliberations in one sweet nutshell. This is one of those CD's to throw onto the cleverly hidden quadraphonic soundsystem on those lazy Sunday afternoons, when you can lie back in the hammock, bask in the sun, and nod away with martini in hand and one of those little paper cocktail umbrellas bobbing away in it: alternatively you can crank up the volume a little and get your party grooving away to the undoubtedly yummy rhythms in its own lesiurely slo-mo ways. All this might sound a little over the top but it is really is one of those classic records. Other artists included in this selection included Azymuth, Nick Holder, NuSpirit Helsinki, Brother of Soul, and Da Lata and while the tempo remains chilled and jazzed-up throughout, all contribute quality material that sustains the journey from start to finish- and Latin Soul is one of the finest tracks of its type to be released this year. Excellent stuff indeed.

Can This label do no wrong? I think not-here's another impeccable selection from the Guidance crew and Karl Injex that collates the best in afro-latin and Brazilian Rhythms. After kicking off with the Turnstyle Orchestra's infectiously funky deep house workout 'Latin Soul', Azymuth drop the goodtime groove ' Ah Voce Nao Sabe' via a deft Roc Hunter reworking. A compilation of this calibre isn't complete without Jazzanova on the firm and they do the business with the Har Yu Percussion Group's ' Welcome 2 the Party'. Elsewhere there's gems like Mr. Gone's 'Mosquito Coast' which is funkier than a mosquito's tweeter and if NuSpirit's ' Afro-Cuban Sunshine' doesn't put a smile on your face and a glide in your stride than there's something missing in your life. Much respect for the inclusion of Bill Summer's 'Brazilian Skies' cos as the Guidance crew well know you have to look back in order to go forwards! Left to Da Lata to wind up this percussive bible and what else but 'Pra Manha' to induce spine tingling joy and the perfect conclusion to an hour of pan-continental sunshine that is guaranteed all year around.

After a handful of stunning summer singles -GU's "Fly With Me," Solaris Heights' "Elementis," and Common Nature's "Can't You See The Sunshine Through The Rain?" -The highly revered, Chicago Based independent Guidance Recordings is gearing up for the Sept. 7th release of "Mundial Muzique." Like the aformentioned "Brazil2mil," Mundial Muziqe revels in showcasing the evolution of the modern tropical groove. Throughout the compilation's ten tracks, Afro-Cuban, Latin, and Brazillian rhythms and chants come together to form on nation under a groove. MAW feat. Luis Salinas, Azymuth, Turnstyle Orchestra, and Brother of Soul, among others are responsile for this rich fusion of funk, jazz, samba, and bossa nova. We wouldn't be surprised if this collection hasn't already become the (unofficial) soundtrack of New York's weekly Body & Soul party. It's that deep! -Micheal Paoletta

Since Guidance's formation three years ago,the prolific Chicago-based imprint has upheld an air of brilliant sophistication only releasing the bast dance floor fodder they can get their hands on. While the label has dabbled with drum and bass and other jazzier styles while house has paid the bills, they haven't been afraid to venture in to more "ethnic" genres-basically anything with a cool drumbeat. Compiled with the help of Atlanta funk maestro Karl Injex, Mundial Muzique picks up where its predecessor, Copa Mundial Muzique, left off, ensnaring a beautiful mosaic of heady beats and boundless funk. But the clincher is that all they really had to do was raid their own vault for tracks like Turnstyle Orchestra's "Latin Soul," Nu-Spirit Helsinki's "Afro-Cuban Sunshine" and Brother of Soul's "Ife Bobowa" and turn to domestic Labels like MAW, Ubiquity and Palm Pictures. Deep funky and soulful-this is great listening for at home, after-hours or any time of the day. -Darren Ressler

With the amount of gorgeous musical output coming from labels like Far Out, Ibadan, Internal Bass, and Chicago's Guidance (the best house music label of this decade), there is an abundance of deep, worldly, soulful sounds igniting dance floors everywhere. Digging into his DJ box and revealing a host of great records, deep house guru DJ Karl Injex of Atlanta along with Guidance, has properly captured the essence of today's global ouse music landscape with Mundial Muzique. Their mission is vividly illustrated by hupnotic rhythms from the minds of De Lata, Jazzanova, Azymuth, Paul Hunter and others. Beautifully packaged, this compilation is a sincere tribute to the global foot stomp of people like Manu Dibango, Toure Kunda, Baaba Maal and Fela Kuti. It's also indelible evidence that Afro, Brazilian, and Latin influences in deep house are again an essential force in modern club music. The work of these and other producers have rekindled a playful delight and curiosity in music from other cultures. Thankfully so, for they connect the dots within us that help explain our collective need for a common, universal freedom principle. A transcendental experience.

This album is all about quality. Forget big house tunes, ignore the name players involved, bypass the stigma of compilations, neglect catagories and listen! The full stop comes after the word Quality. But then thats what Guidance do for a living. Opening with Turnstyle Orchestra's percussion fest, Azymuth start connecting the diasporic dots with the soulful and funky. It continues. " Da Sambafrique" "Ife Bobowa" " Brazilian Skies"-this is both beautifully chilled and rhythmically uplifting. How could anyone fail by concluding with Da Lata's "Pra Manha" ? A collection of genuinely Afro-Carribbean and latin beats that offer true guidance to anyone looking for the real deal.

Not content with being a spiritual black dance label, Chicago's Guidance Recordings have taken it upon themselves to show all second rate compilers a thing or two about what makes a compilation great. Selecting modern Afro-Carribbean, Latin and Brazilian rhythms from all points between Helsinki, Berlin, New York and Rio. Artists featured here are in the top league with contemporary producers Bill Summers, MAW, Da Lata, Azymuth, and Nick Holder all throwing in their weight. Not a filler in sight, the treasure trove includes Nu Spirit Helsinki's "Afro-Cuban Sunshine" The Har Yu Percussion Group vs Jazzanova with "Welcome to the Party" and the astonishing "Ife Bobowa" from the painfully talented Brother of Soul. Latin and Afro soaked music may not be of instant appeal to many, but this compilation is strongly recommended and guaranteed to provide smiles and hip sways. Guidance we salute you.

Certianly one of the most impressive compilations these particular lugs have heard in recent times, "Mundial Muzique" is a 'Selection of Modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin and Brazilian Rhythms'courtesy of top Chicago label (and a highly respected one at that) Guidance Recordings. Ten extremely funky floor-filling jazzified grooves are showcased here from around the globe, kicking off with the wonderful "Latin Soul" from Guidance's own Turstyle Orchestra, a track where the title pretty much sums up the tune. But "Latin Soul" also contains a pounding bassline that never gives up before some funky keyboard and guitar dabblings complement the cut's resonant percussive feel. A great start to any compilation and already you get the distinct impression that this is only the beginning of what is to come. The much sought after Roc Hunter mix of Azymuth's "Ah Voce Nao Sabe" (Roc's Dub) is nothing short of stunning and gives some of us the chance to finally get their hands on it if you (like me) missed it the first time around (mainly due to the fact that the initial vinyl pressing was snapped up like hot cakes and promos we're limited) on London's trendy Far Out Recordings. Roc Hunter, an experienced artist, producer and mixer has given this track a masterful overhaul keeping the bassline but adding more bass, jazzy keys and making more use of the vocal hook. Blinding stuff indeed and worth the price of the CD alone. Bearing that little fact in mind, we are then treated to "Mosquito Coast 98" (Barrio Fusion Mix) from Leicester based Simon Bramley or Mr. Gone as he is otherwise known who is fast gaining himself a very good reputation after being compared to Rainer Truby, Jazzanova and Ian Pooley for his natural ability to make some of the finest jazz groove cuts around at present. Nick Holder contributes with the highly charged latin Saxaphone/Keyboard stomper "Da Sambafrique" before the Brazilian influenced Brother of Soul tune "Ife Bobowa" and Da Lata's samba flavored " Pra Manha" (licensed from Chris Blackwell's impressive Palm Pictures imprint) are also worthy of note. MAW feat Luis Salinas "Pienso En Ti" (Latin Soul Mix), Nu-Spirit Helsinki "Afro-Cuban Sunshine" and Jazzanova vs. Har Yu Percussion Group "Welcome to the Party" further adds to a stunning compilation which displays some of the most innovative, experimental and masterful black music at its most wonderful best.

Chicago's Guidance Recording's have spent the last 18 months reinventing themselves with considerable aplomb. From their solid house foundations (Glenn Underground, Mark Grant, Abacus et all) they've moved onward and upwards-there's jazz, Latin and Afro-funk flavors here-but despite the new diversity, they've retained their stamp of quality and soul. Mundial Muzique is another ten tracks of rolliucking future phunk. From Jazzanova's exquisite re-rub of "Welcome to the Party" to MAW's intricate "Pienso en Ti "its a collection bursting at the seams with grade A, high octane grooves, truly a case of "muzique" sounding better. Summer was quite simply made for it. Fluid summer funk from the four corners of the globe.

Wherein the Windy City label flips the script offering instead of its usual deep house grooves "a selection of Afro-Carribean, Latin, and Brazilian rhythms." and damn fine it is too. Judging by the sleevenotes, it is a footie inspired album though, strangely, it was put together by Americans. Anyway, all ten tracks from such disparate locations as Canada, Finland (yes Finland!), America, Germany, and Britan share the same cool latin tinged vibe. As such the tempo shifts smoothly from midtempo grooves to traditional house. Turnstyle Orchestra's cool "Latin Soul" occupies the number one shirt, while the back four make up of Mr. Gone's ace reworking of Mosquito Coast, Roc Hunter's dub of Azymuth's "Ah Voce Nao Sabe" and Nick Holder's wonderful latin and sax looped "Sambafrique". The midfield, to persist with the footie analalogy, consists of NuSpirit Helsinki's "Afro-Cuban Sunshine" while Paul Hunter's Brother of Soul and Jazzanova function as the wing backs. Then there's Bill Summers. His 1977 track Brazilian Skies looks old and past it on paper but is the eventual winner, while Masters at Work and Patrik Forge's "Pra Manha" tie for second place. Sit back relax and drift off to a warmer, nicer place.
