The appearance of a guitar tab is quite similar to a music sheet. The sole variation is that a music sheet comprises of five lines whereas a guitar tab has just six. Each of these six lines represents a string on the guitar. The thickest string is always on the bottom line and they get progressively smaller going up, this is important to remember.

You'll normally see numbers on the lines. The numbers placed on the lines tell you which "fret" you need to play on that string and so on. For example, in case you come across a numeral "2", it would signify 2nd fret, numeral "3", third fret and so on. In case you come across the numeral "0", it signifies that the string is played "open". The fret board should not have any fingers on it when the string is played "open". The letter "X" tells you that the string is not played at all.

When you hold the guitar, you are using your left hand. right hand is known as picking hand The notes on your guitar will actually be played by this hand. You will notice that there are bars that run across the neck. Most guitar fret boards have 22 positions that become closer in position nearer to your body.
